Recently I was spending time with London based Compadres, including Marcus Watson, Founder and Chairman of Adoreum Club. In the lead up to a strategy day for Adoreum, we spent time workshopping and planning, out of the city at his country property in Hampshire.

We decided to walk over to visit Marcus’s brother-in-law, Peter Charles MBE, at his equestrian property, Heathcroft Farm, also in Hampshire. Peter is an Olympic Gold Medalist in Showjumping, winning in London 2012, and is a hero to his son, Harry Charles, who is also an Olympic Gold Medalist for Show Jumping, winning in Paris in 2024.

After a tour of the property, and meeting the beautiful Romeo 88, the Olympic Gold Medal ride. What followed was a hilarious, compelling and inspiring cup of tea with the family. To have two generations of Gold Medalists in the same sport, in the same kitchen is rare but understandable! Is it genetics, or is it determination and hard work? There are many answers to that, and awesome stories on the road to triumph….and here’s a brilliant one!
Two generations of Gold Medalists
Peter coaches Harry and his two daughters, Sienna and Scarlett, both professional riders. Peter shared an incredible story of Harry busting his wrist three weeks before the Paris 2024 Olympics. The emergency doctor in Germany told Harry “there was no way” he could ride for six weeks. Peter looked at Harry, who was understandably deeply upset and troubled, and said, “When was the last time the doctor rode a horse”?
Peter has a knack for always finding a way when most of us would give up. He’s got the gold medal and an equestrian empire to prove it. How else could he have gone from being a young man with nothing to building a complex organization spanning across Europe?
With Olympic selectors possibly about to remove Harry from the 2024 Olympic team, Peter requested a two-week grace period. Where would you take a world-class equestrian rider with a fractured wrist?
To a boxing expert: Peter, an unconventional legend, continued on that path and wrapped Harry’s wrist like a prize fighter. Meanwhile, Peter kept training Romeo, ensuring he was 95% prepared for the Olympics, while Harry rested. Within two weeks, Harry rode in front of the Olympic selectors, won the event, made it through to the 2024 Olympics, and won the gold medal for his country.
